How and when to order your summer hanging baskets
When: In January of each year we begin to take orders for our summer hanging baskets. It is best to order early to avoid the disappointment of not getting one or two of these beauties. Plus, March is the month when we start to plant out our hanging baskets. Last orders are on 14th February. Payments not received by this date will result in your order being cancelled without warning.
Maximum order: 2 x hanging baskets per household
How: By e-mailing info@green-onion.co.uk you must include your full name, address, postcode and mobile number and whether you would like delivery or to collect. If these details are not supplied we will not be able to invoice you. There is also an order form at the very bottom of this page.
What happens next: Once we have received your email order, with all of the relevant details, you will receive an invoice with our bank details on it. All invoices must be paid straightaway please, or your order will be cancelled. We will ask you to confirm by email when you have made payment. You will receive an email confirming receipt of your payment.
Deliveries: These begin in the 1st and 2nd weeks of June. Actual delivery dates depend upon when the risk of frost has passed. Frost will kill your hanging basket plants. We will contact you by text when we are going to deliver to your address.
Monday to Saturday deliveries will take place from 12 lunch time until 9pm.
There are no deliveries on Sundays.
Please do not call us during this busy period. We are facilitating deliveries for hundreds of clients’. If we have to stop to answer your call, text or email you will slow down deliveries for everyone. Thank you.
The importance of ordering in January: We need to know numbers well before March so that we can order the correct amount of plants, baskets, liners, compost, chains etc. The sooner we know our numbers the better. All hanging baskets benefit from being planted as early as possible in March, this allows the plants the opportunity to settle, root and grow into the soil in their basket. They will then flourish and be cared for by us until your delivery in June.
All the plants we use for our hanging baskets are kept in a poly tunnel. These plants having been grown from seed/cuttings, they are potted up in small seed pods or pots and nurtured and cared for until they are the right size to plant in your hanging baskets, (usually March or early April of each year). Any plants not planted in to hanging baskets in March are still watered, fed and cared for, however, they stay in their pots and are confined to that growing space. This means those particular plants will only be able to grown to the size of the container they are planted in, and no larger. They will stay that same size until you place your order and we re-plant them into your hanging basket, which is a bigger, deeper space for them to grow bigger in.
Baskets planted later than March will take a few weeks to catch up with the earlier planted baskets. You do not need to despair. All of our hanging baskets, whether they were planted in March, or June have the potential to reach 35 to 50 cm in diameter. The size the plants eventually reach is determined by you, the amount of care you provide for them during the summer months and how often you feed, deadhead and cut them back if needed.
Once you’ve ordered you will receive an invoice with our bank details on it. Please make payment straight away, then email us to let us know you’ve made payment. We will respond to that email confirming receipt of your payment. Once full payment has been made for your baskets you can not be refunded for any reason. You will not hear from us again until the 1s or 2nd week of June.

Our summer baskets can grow from 34- 50 inches if you follow our care advice sheet
As soon as we have delivered your summer baskets you can hang them in the place of your choice and then water them. If there’s the slightest risk of a frost, you must bring your summer hanging basket/s inside. Frost will kill, or irretrievably damage your hanging basket plants.
How do I extend the life of my hanging basket/s
- Hanging baskets need to be fed a low, slow and steady stream of nutrients
If you provide plants with too much power too quickly, they will expand their roots and foliage too fast. The result will be plants that outgrow their baskets and stop blooming because of it.Pop a bucket under your hanging basket when you’re watering, this will catch the nutrient filled water that escapes from the bottom go your basket and you can re-use that the following day when watering. - Insufficient or irregular watering will play a huge role in the early demise of your hanging baskets. The soil in your baskets is out in the open air and because of this dries out much faster than soil in the ground. When flowering hanging basket plants dry out, their roots and leaves shrivel and shrink. This is caused by the stress of no water. If you leave them dry for long enough they will go brown and die off. Plants with shrivelled roots can not absorb water. Please get in to the habit of watering plants at a consistent time of the day. Early morning is by far the best time to water. It helps plants to take on the upcoming stress and heat of the day, and there is less chance of damage from the sun’s rays burning the foliage.
- Powering your baskets plants with fertiliser/tomato food
The plants growing in your hanging baskets have a limited amount of soil from which to absorb energy. They have no ability to expand beyond their basket to find additional nutrients. That means fertilizing is a must. - How and when you fertilise is the real secret to flowering success
Hanging baskets need a low, light dose of fertiliser at least every 10 to 14 days. To keep your baskets growing and blooming it’s far better to give a lower dose of nutrients more frequently. This will feed the plants slowly with a constant dose of power.
Frequently asked questions
- Do I get a discount if I order multiple baskets?
We’re sorry, no, we don’t offer reductions on multiple purchases. The maximum amount of baskets you can order is 2 per household.
- How will I know when my baskets are being delivered?
Deliveries will take place in the 1st and 2nd weeks of June. The risk of frost should have passed by then. We will text the day before to notify you we are coming. The first 2 weeks of June are extremely busy for us, we are delivering hundreds of hanging baskets to you all in around Teesside, Tees Valley, County Durham and North Yorkshire. Our deliveries are made logistically over a 2 week period depending on how many baskets we’ve sold. Please do not call, text or email us to ask when your order is being delivered or can be collected. This slows us down. If we have to stop to respond to you, we are not able to deliver. This causes frustration for all clients and us. - Do you sell smaller hanging baskets?
I’m afraid not. We only make and sell 16 inch summer hanging baskets(growing to 35-50cm in width), and 16 inch Autumn through to spring baskets. - Why isn’t my hanging basket as big as the ones in the photographs on your website?
When you receive your hanging basket/s they will be in their early stages of growth, they need time to establish themselves. The hanging baskets in the photographs on our page are of our hanging baskets when they are established and flourishing.
- Can you make me a bespoke hanging basket in the colours I want?
Sorry, we don’t offer a bespoke planting service. All of our hanging baskets are ready-made and beautiful. Each one is pre-planted with the same plants in a variation of colours. We can not guarantee which colours you will receive. - Where do you deliver to?
We deliver in Teesside, Tees Valley & North Yorkshire. Delivery costs vary depending on the area you live in. - Can you fill my empty baskets for me?
Sorry, we do not offer this service. We only supply ready-made large Summer and ready made 16 inch Autumn through to spring hanging baskets. - What if I’m not home when you deliver my hanging basket/s?
Don’t worry, if you are not home we will leave your hanging basket somewhere safe and take a photograph of it as proof of delivery. - Will you hang my baskets for me if I’m not at home or when you deliver ?
Sorry, no. Our driver is not insured to hang your baskets for you. We can not guarantee you’ve put up the correct hanging basket brackets in place, or that you’ve securely and correctly fitted your brackets to your wall/fence - If I’m going to be on holiday when you deliver can you look after my hanging basket for me?
Sorry, no, we can not look after hanging baskets for you. Unfortunately we don’t have the time or the space available to do this for you - What size hanging basket bracket do I need?
You will need to use at least an 18 or 20 inch heavy duty hanging basket bracket that is very firmly secured to your wall/fence - Will my hanging baskets come back next year?
Your beautiful flowering displays will sadly come to an end in September or October and definitely by the time the first frosts come. Hanging baskets filled with annual plants can’t stay pretty forever. Even the greenest of green fingers can’t keep annual hanging baskets alive all year round. Even perennial plants that grow back year after year would need to be replaced, or significantly pruned in order to continue growing in a hanging basket after one season. - Will my basket be ok hanging in a shaded area?
Yes, your basket will be fine. It will of course be slower to grow than a basket planted in the sun - Will my basket be ok if I hang it in full sun?
Yes, but be aware that it will progress much more quickly than a hanging basket placed in a shaded area, also only water your hanging basket when it is not in full sun to avoid scorching the leaves (see your care sheet)

Caring for your summer hanging baskets
Watering
Do not water your basket until it is hung in the position you want it to be, otherwise it will become extremely heavy and awkward to lift. Once hung, give it a generous soak and a feed.Check the moisture levels of your baskets every day in summer. Always water them unless the compost is already wet. Letting your hanging baskets dry out increases the risk of your basket plants dying, especially when days are warm and windy. An easy way to check if your baskets need watering is to gently lift the basket to gauge how heavy it is. If it is light, they need more frequent watering. Avoid them drying out to the point where your plants begin to droop. If your plants do wilt take a bucket and place it underneath the basket while you water them. The bucket will capture the water that runs off the surface of the basket/s. Return the water in the bucket back to the hanging basket. This little trick will also save losing soluble nutrients that are needed for flowering.
Spraying with organic Bee friendly pesticides
Please check daily for infestations of aphids such as white fly, black fly and green fly. If you find an infestation treat it immediately. These critters will devour your hanging basket’s plants if left untreated. Always use a Bee friendly, organic pesticide to protect our wildlife. Follow the instructions on the packaging.
Snails & Slugs (Gastropods)
If your hanging basket/s are going to be hanging next to a garden fence or wall and the flowers are touching your wall or fence, there is every chance that slugs/snails will climb and get in to your hanging basket/s to eat your plants. You can manually remove slugs and snails and relocate them to a different area of your garden, however, they will come back the following day. If possible hang your baskets on a heavy duty hanging basket bracket which has at least an 18 or 20 inches projection. This lets them hang at a good distance away from your walls and fences preventing snails and slugs from getting to them.
Feed your hanging baskets
To promote healthy growth and more flowering, we recommend you feed your hanging baskets at least every 10 to 14days, alternating between Miracle Grow and Tomato food. Make sure you half the recommended dose on the packet, a low but steady nutrient feeds is best. If you would like to really push the boundaries and have enormous hanging baskets, increase feeding to once a week alternating between Miracle Grow and tomato food.
Deadheading all flowers
Finally, deadhead spent blooms daily to ensure a long-lasting display. You must dead head all the flowers in your hanging baskets not just some of them. Deadheading your plants prevents the flower heads turning to seed, thus forcing your plants to produce more flowers for you. The longer you allow dying and decaying blooms to stay on your baskets, the longer it will take new blooms to form and flower. Removing old/spent blooms is a huge key to your baskets flowering for longer.
Turn your baskets
Every few weeks take your baskets down from their brackets, turn them round and re hang them. This allows the sunlight to get to every side of your hanging basket and promotes even growing of your baskets.
