Landscaping project at Aspen Gardens – A residential care home in Stockton, Teesside.
Charis Gracey, the centre manager chose Green Onion Landscaping to build 3 raised beds, a patio area and lay a new turf lawn. We were chosen from a list of contractors who had given tenders and quotations.
The whole team were thrilled to be given the opportunity to carry out this landscaping project at Aspen Gardens care home.
During our consultation, Charis had explained that the residents would like a large paved patio area to enjoy on the warm summer days. A place where they could gather for a chat, or sit quietly and admire the flowers they had grown themselves.
Some of the elderly residents used to be keen gardeners, they were excited at the prospect of having the opportunity to have green fingers again. They were really enthusiastic about being able to keep their independence by doing some gardening in the place where they now live. Three raised beds were built for the residents to use as flower or vegetable beds.
The large patio area was built directly off an existing paved area using the same paving stones – Buff Saxon- which is a yellow coloured paving stone. The raised beds had to be constructed in such a way that the residents would be able to access them on all sides in their wheelchairs or walking frames. Raised beds are excellent for the elderly or disabled, they eliminate the need to bend down.
Making the raised beds accessible
Green Onion Landscaping built the raised beds at a height which allowed the wheelchair users of Aspen Gardens to work at them comfortably when planting or tending to the vegetables and flowers.
Our team of professional landscapers edged the patio area with curved topped buff pin kerbs to give it a neat professional finished look. Small gaps were left intermittently in the pin kerbs to allow for drainage. The raised beds were filled with topsoil and compost ready for the residents to begin their planting.
We also laid a new lush green turf lawn for the residents too, this extended right around the newly laid patio area. The residents and our team were delighted with the result of this landscaping project. It was an absolute pleasure to see the faces of the residents when the garden was officially opened for them.
